Create and customize user accounts on Windows XP

by Ken on Jan.28, 2009, under Desktop Software

Today I had a customer call in with a synchronization issue.  He wanted to use BlackBerry Desktop Manager to sync with Microsoft Outlook. The issue he was having is that he was sharing one PC with multiple users. His spouse was the primary user and was already syncing Outlook with her iphone.  He didn’t want to get her info mixed in with his and didn’t want to have to manually remove them from his BlackBerry.

  • Resolution: Create separate user accounts on the PC using the administrative options in Windows XP.
  • End result: Each person would have their own profile and own “copy” of  Outlook. The caller was able to setup his Outlook contacts and install BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

How to synchronize my BlackBerry with my Desktop Computer (Mac OS X)

by Ken on Jan.07, 2009, under Desktop Software

  • Be sure you have PocketMac installed on your Mac already. If not you can get it for free here.
  • PocketMac for BlackBerry - Icon

  • Connect your BlackBerry to your Mac (PocketMac currently only supports USB and serial port).
  • Start PocketMac by clicking the icon.
  • Click on BlackBerry.

PocketMac for BlackBerry - Status

  • You should see your device name an PIN on that page. If not, make sure you connected your BlackBerry to your Mac already and restart PocketMac. Unlike the “BlackBerry Desktop Manager” for Windows PocketMac does not recognize devices that are attached during its runtime.
  • Click on the Contacts button to open the contacts tab.

PocketMac for BlackBerry - Contacts

  • Activate the “Sync Contacts [...]“ checkbox to enable contact data synchronization in general. Below you find a list of supported contact management programs. As I am using Apple’s Address Book, I checked that one. You should check the appropriate checkbox according to the program you are using. You can also tweak the setting for the specific program you want to synchronize with at “Advanced Preferences…”. That’s it, we are done for contacts.
  • Click on the Calendar button to open the calendar tab.

PocketMac for BlackBerry - Calendar

  • In here we also check the “Sync Calendar [...]“ checkbox to enable calendar item synchronization. As my configuration uses iCal for calendar items I selected “iCalCalendar”. That’s it, we are done for calendar items.
  • Click on the Tasks button to open the tasks tab.

PocketMac for BlackBerry - Tasks

  • In here we also check the “Sync Tasks [...]“ checkbox to enable task synchronization. As my configuration uses iCal for task items as well I selected “iCalCalendar”. That’s it, we are done for tasks. (Hint: The program on the right – NextAction! – is compatible with PocketMac and therefor with all applications PocketMac can synchronize your BlackBerry with. It is world’s best GTD application for BlackBerry® Wireless Handhelds!)
  • Click on the Notes button to open the notes tab.

PocketMac for BlackBerry - Notes

  • In here we also check the “Sync Notes [...]“ checkbox to enable notes synchronization. As my configuration uses StickiesNotes for notes on my Mac I selected “StickiesNotes”. That’s it, we are done for notes.
  • Click on the Bookmarks button to open the bookmarks tab.

PocketMac for BlackBerry - Safari Bookmarks

  • As I am not using Safari for desktop browsing I don’t synchronize that. But those of you who like to use Safari can synchronize your Safari’s bookmarks to your BlackBerry. To do that, just activate the “Push Bookmarks [...]“ checkbox. That’s it, we are done for bookmarks.
  • Now you can press the “Sync” button in the top right corner of PocketMac to synchronize your BlackBerry with your Mac and its programs.

PocketMac for BlackBerry - Sync

  • Follow the instructions. If there are any conflicts between your device’s and desktop’s databases you will be notified. You should check all notification carefully as they might contain important information.

PIN Not Registered

by Ken on Jan.06, 2009, under Desktop Software

“PIN Not Registered” appears in my BlackBerry Desktop Redirector. This error occurs when an encryption key has not been generated. Encryption keys can be manually or automatically generated. For maximum security, new keys should be generated every two to four weeks. If you choose to generate a key automatically, you are reminded after 31 days to generate a new key when you connect your handheld to your PC with the desktop software running.

  • To generate an encryption key automatically:
    • Connect your handheld to your PC and open the Redirector Settings tool in the desktop software.
    • Select the Security tab and select Generate keys manually. Click Apply.
    • The following message appears: “The current encryption key is out of date. A new one will have to be generated.”
    • Click OK.
    • The Generating New Key dialog box appears with instructions to move your PC’s mouse in a random motion to generate a key.
    • Click Apply. Then click OK to return to the desktop software.
    • Once you have generated the encryption key, synchronize your handheld with the desktop software.

BlackBerry Desktop Redirector displays “No PIN”

by Ken on Jan.06, 2009, under Device Software

The BlackBerry Desktop Redirector displays “No PIN”.  Possible issues:

  • Handheld is not registered on the wireless network.
    • To register with the wireless network: From the Home screen on the BlackBerry device, scroll to Options and then Network Settings.
    • Confirm that the settings are correct and that the Radio field reads On. If the Radio field reads Off, press the SPACE key to change the field to On.
    • Click the trackwheel/ball to view the menu and select Register Now. You should receive a confirmation response from the wireless network in the Messages screen stating that the handheld has been registered. If you didn’t receive a confirmation message you may not be in coverage. Ensure that you are in an area of sufficient coverage for receiving email messages.
  • Information have been added incorrectly to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
    • Contact your system administrator to confirm you have been properly added to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Emails are not being forwarded to the Handheld

by Ken on Jan.06, 2009, under Desktop Software

There are several reasons why email may not be forwarded to your handheld:

  • Is you PC turned on?
    • If your PC is not on, the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector cannot run and no messages will be forwarded to your handheld. Your desktop computer must be on any time you want to receive messages on your handheld.
  • Is the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector running?
    • If the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector is not running, no E-mail messages will be forwarded to your handheld. Look for the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector icon in the Windows System Tray on your PC. If it is there, the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector is running. If it is not there, open the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector by selecting Redirector from the BlackBerry program group under Program Files in the Windows Start menu.
  • Is your handheld in the cradle connected to your PC?
    • If you have the handheld in the cradle and you selected the option not to forward messages when the handheld is in the cradle, you will not receive any messages on your handheld. Take the handheld out of the cradle to find out if the messages are forwarding properly.
  • Have you created Microsoft Exchange Inbox assistant rules?
    • If you have set up Inbox Assistant rules that move new messages from the inbox to another folder, they will not be forwarded to your handheld because the Inbox assistant moves them before the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector can forward them. Once you delete the Inbox assistant rule, new messages should forward to your handheld. See your Microsoft Exchange documentation for more information on the Inbox assistant.
  • Have you set filter rules?
    • If you have added some filters in the Redirector Configuration settings, you may have instructed BlackBerry Desktop Software to send only certain messages to your handheld. Check the filters to make sure the messages you want to receive are being forwarded.
