Documents To Go
by Ken on Dec.26, 2008, under Device Software
Documents To Go for BlackBerry in OS 4.5 allows you to open Word and Powerpoint files, however, to be able to create and edit files you need to upgrade to a “premium” version.
-
-
- FYI: if you see a menu item with an Asterisks (*) by it then you need to pay for the premium version to use it.
-
- The opening screen of Word To Go. You can open files from your SD card!!!

![Berryreview0s45betaword[2]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[2]_small1.jpg)
- Notice the new folder in the SD card folder structure named documents.

![Berryreview0s45betaword[4]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[4]_small.jpg)
- Above you can see the two test documents I had in place. Notice the fact that one of them is a .docx file from Office 2007. I had to try it out. You can see the error you get when you try to open office 2007 files below. The second image is the loading screen if you open a 97–2003 Office file.

![Berryreview0s45betaword[6]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[6]_small.jpg)
- You then get shown the file with images and all. The file you see below is just the BerryReview website copied and pasted into a document. Pretty cool…

![Berryreview0s45betaword[7]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[7]_small.jpg)
- If you hit the menu button you get
![Berryreview0s45betaword[8]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[8]_small.jpg)
![Berryreview0s45betaword[9]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[9]_small.jpg)
- Yes you did see that correctly. It says Edit Mode. You can now edit files as you see below. Also notice all the menu items with asterisks next to them. Those are only available in the premium version. You can edit and save files.
![Berryreview0s45betaword[10]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[10]_small.jpg)
![Berryreview0s45betaword[11]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[11]_small.jpg)
- When you are editing you can go to the format menu button and get the basic formating options. Once again notice all the cut out features in the standard vs premium version. You can also see that the insert and table features in the main menu are cut out in the standard version.
![Berryreview0s45betaword[13]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[13]_small.jpg)
![Berryreview0s45betaword[12]](http://www.berryreview.com/wp-content/uploads/berryreview0s45betaword[12]_small.jpg)
- Notice the switch input language menu button. You can write documents in different languages!!! Also after you close the file it will show up in a recent documents list on the main screen of Word To Go.

Back up and Restore Third-party Applications on your BlackBerry
by Ken on Dec.25, 2008, under Desktop Software
Step One
To start the application back up process you’ll need to open up the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Plug in your BlackBerry and enter any necessary passwords. Then click on Device Switch Wizard icon which is located on the top-right hand corner of the Desktop Manager home screen.

Step Two
Once in the Device Switch Wizard, click Start for Switch BlackBerry devices

Step Three
On the right-hand side you will see a check box for “Device and Data Options.” Ensure that it is unchecked and that “Third-party applications” is left checked. Now click “Next”.

Step Four
The Device Switch Wizard is will now backing up your third-party applications. Once it is finished do not click “Cancel” or “Next.”

Step Five
On your computer’s desktop go to Start > Search and search your hard-drive for your device’s PIN number. If you don’t know your PIN, it will be listed at the bottom of Desktop Manager as “Device connected (PIN). Alternatively, you can find it by going to Options > Status on your device. Ensure that you search hidden files and folders. You will find a folder with the same name as your PIN as well as a .alx file. Drag both of these files onto your desktop. On your desktop move the .alx file into the folder and store it somewhere safe. Go back into Desktop Manager and cancel the Device Switch Wizard.

That’s it! You’re done backing up your third-party apps. Should disaster strike and you end up losing all of your apps, restoring them is a simple three-step process.
Step One
Open Desktop Manager, plug in your BlackBerry, enter any necessary passwords and select the Application Loader icon on the top-left hand corner of the Desktop Manager home screen.

Step Two
In Application Loader, click “Start” under Add / Remove Applications.

Step Three
After the Application Loader scans your device, click on “Browse” and locate the folder named after your PIN that contains your application back-ups.

Highlight the .alx file and click “Open”. Then click “Next” and all of your applications will start to be loaded onto your BlackBerry.
